Work on Version 2.6
- Posted by Mehar at Jan 11 - 2010 - 538 viewsWorking on a CMS that hasn't seen any updates for roughly two years poses some interesting design challenges. Many questions also loomed, the most prominent one being, does anyone still use OneCMS? Regardless, OneCMS 2.6 was built with them in mind.
Our first goal was to try and bring OneCMS up to speed with many other CMS's, while some stuff was cut from the 2.6 build over time constraints we think we have gotten pretty close. The second was to take feedback from the community and try to implement those ideas. The third was to fix the bugs, security holes, etc in OneCMS and to take steps to ensure potential exploits are patched before they can do any damage. We can't promise everything was found or implemented, but we tried to come as close as possible.
It's also in our vision to start pushing the "general purpose" aspects of OneCMS, keeping in line with the slogan. It will still ship as a gaming oriented script but we've added a few minor things to help keep in line with the slogan. It will really be something that develops in the long run.
One of the things we've done is split up the admin files to a certain extent. Why? Simply because it makes it easier to customize your install, if you wanted to remove a feature in 2.5 you would have had to deactivate said feature and then edit your admin.php file to remove instances of the code for full effect. Now you can simply deactivate the module and delete the file from your install if you wish.
OneCMS 2.6 also focuses on the SEO side of having a website, various template changes were made to make vanilla OneCMS as SEO friendly as possible. We also ported over the AdaptCMS Site Map plugin which will ship with OneCMS 2.6. And yes, OneCMS 2.6 will have a fully featured plugin system!
For those wanting a bit more out of the box when it came to design, OneCMS 2.6 comes with a new template oriented towards gaming sites. We will also have other templates available for OneCMS shortly after launch both free and premium ones.
There are a few bug fixes left before we can send OneCMS 2.6 out to the masses, we expect it shouldn't take too long. This post doesn't contain a full list of changes, we might post that later. The OneCMS site is currently running a very early beta of 2.6 for those interested. OneCMS has been famous for its installs/updates which are usually one click and hassle free, we hope to continue this tradition in 2.6.
That's all for now, we welcome your feedback in the forums!
